Flying Around

Comic Strip Project

For this assignment, we were asked to create a comic strip teaching something relevant to our discipline. I decided to teach the idea of genres, and how there are many different types of genres for a reader to choose from. This helps support the idea that there is a book out there for everyone, and reading can be fun and engaging. It is through this project that I learned about transmediation, which is “the act of translating meanings from one sign system to another” (Siegel). Using different mediums for lessons, projects, etc, is a great way to “increase students' opportunities to engage in generative and reflective thinking because learners must invent a connection between the two sign systems” (Siegel). I really love the idea of transmediation because it allows for people who learn differently to get creative. Students have to make connections they never would have made before. It keeps the classroom interesting and is a great way to involve relevant materials the students can use. Comic strips like this one, hands on activities, or digital literacy are just a few examples of ways to incorporate transmediation in the classroom. This project was very unique, and because of the creativity it allowed it was very enjoyable to create.
